In Feucht and the Nürnberger Land district, the need for action is real: many older buildings with central heating have not been balanced for decades. The legal deadlines expire in 2026-owners who have not yet taken action should do so now.
In a heating circuit without hydraulic balancing, hot water is distributed unevenly: Radiators located close to the boiler receive too much water (and thus too much heat), while those further away receive too little. The boiler must then operate at a high flow temperature to supply all rooms.
Hydraulic balancing solves this problem: The thermostatic valves on each radiator are set to a precisely calculated flow rate. The result: consistent temperatures in all rooms, lower flow temperatures possible (up to 5 Kelvin lower), energy savings of 10-15%, less heating noise, and a longer pump lifespan.
Hydraulic balancing is particularly important when installing a heat pump: Heat pumps operate more efficiently at low flow temperatures (35-45 °C instead of 70-80 °C for gas boilers). Without hydraulic balancing, it is often not possible to lower the flow temperature this much without compromising comfort in individual rooms.
The Building Energy Act (GEG) introduced an operator obligation for hydraulic balancing in § 60a. This obligation applies to buildings with central, gas-fired heating systems that have not undergone optimization measures in the last six years.

These deadlines have passed. Owners in Feucht who have not yet performed a balancing are formally in default. The BAFA subsidy rate of 15% applies to hydraulic balancing as a standalone measure (BEG EM). As part of a heating subsidy under KfW 458 (heating system replacement with a heat pump or biomass system), balancing is included as a mandatory accompanying measure-its cost share increases the total eligible amount and is co-funded with the subsidy package for the new heating system.
Hydraulic balancing according to Method B (VDI 2048 Part 1) is the more sophisticated and precise method and is therefore a prerequisite for funding from BAFA and KfW.
Heating Load Calculation: The basis is a room-by-room heating load calculation according to DIN 12831. For each room, the amount of heat required at the design temperature (-12 °C for the Nuremberg area) is calculated. This calculation can be derived in a simplified manner from the construction plans and the building envelope.
Determination of Flow Rates: Based on the heating load, the required water flow rate is calculated for each radiator. The thermostatic valves are adjusted accordingly (pre-setting).
Hydraulic Balancing Report: The specialized contractor performing the work (heating engineer with HVAC qualification) prepares a report that serves as proof for BAFA and KfW. No subsidy without a report.
Pump Optimization: As part of the balancing process, the heating circuit pump is also optimized. Modern high-efficiency pumps (ErP Class A) reduce the pump’s electricity consumption by 70-90% compared to old circulation pumps-an often-overlooked savings factor.

Hydraulic balancing Method B-the version eligible for subsidies-may only be performed by specialized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) contractors. Not every heating contractor offers Method B: The complete heating load calculation according to DIN 12831 and the room-by-room valve adjustment require specialized knowledge and software tools (e.g., from Danfoss, Honeywell, or Herz).

A single-family home in Feucht (built in 1975, 160 m², uninsulated exterior walls, gas heating system from 2010) with an annual natural gas consumption of 20,000 kWh. Hydraulic balancing optimizes the flow temperature by 5 Kelvin and reduces consumption by 12%.

Method B of hydraulic balancing (VdZ form) goes beyond simply adjusting the preset valves. At its core is room-by-room heating load calculation according to DIN EN 12831-for each room, the heating load is calculated in watts, the required flow rate is determined, and the radiator is set to this value.

In mixed operation, a system separator (mixing valve) is often installed to supply both circuits with different flow temperatures. The hydraulic balancing must calculate both circuits separately. Heating contractors who balance only one of the two circuits do not fully meet the GEG requirements-check the report after the work is completed.
Hydraulic balancing is a mandatory item in the energy performance certificate (energy consumption certificate pursuant to GEG § 79).
